Manager
A Store Manager oversees all aspects of the store, ensuring it remains a vibrant, welcoming space for customers and staff. This leadership role involves managing day-to-day operations, supervising staff, and fostering a strong team culture while maintaining excellent customer service and sales performance. Reporting directly to the owner, with a dotted line to other managers, this position is integral to the store’s success.
The Manager collaborates with ownership to curate a dynamic store environment that reflects the diverse needs of the neighborhood.
Key responsibilities include overseeing customer service, inventory, events, and staffing, while implementing new procedures and policies.
This individual must be a skilled communicator, adept at multitasking, and capable of leading under pressure.
This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week role based primarily in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
Core Responsibilities
Day-to-Day Operations

Supervise staff and all store functions, including customer service, merchandising, and inventory management.

Maintain organized and inviting displays tied to current themes and trends.

Oversee receiving, shipping, and inventory control.

Manage invoicing, accounts payable, and other administrative tasks.
Staff Leadership

Recruit, hire, onboard, and train booksellers.

Develop staffing schedules and work plans to achieve store goals.

Provide coaching and performance evaluations to foster staff growth and ensure adherence to standards.
Marketing and Events

Oversee the store’s website, email campaigns, and annual events programming, including author signings and storytimes.
Community Engagement

Build relationships with community organizations and foster a bookselling culture through recommendations, staff picks, and engaging customer interactions.
Qualifications

Retail management experience, preferably in bookselling.

Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills.

Expertise in merchandising and inventory systems.

A love of books and a passion for independent business.

Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings.
Compensation and Benefits: $18–$22/hour, PTO, holidays, ARCs, and employee discounts.
Events Coordinator
The Events Coordinator helps plan, organize, and execute a diverse range of events that align with WORD’s mission. Working closely with the store manager and owner, this role curates programming, liaises with publishers and community partners, and some managerial tasks. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, detail-oriented, and skilled at balancing multiple priorities, including event logistics, promotion, and bookselling duties.
This is a part-time role based primarily in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
Core Responsibilities
Event Coordination

Research and book author events by liaising with publishers and publicists.

Manage logistics for in-store and off-site events, including ordering books, hosting, and set-up/clean-up.

Track and analyze event performance to inform future programming.
Promotion and Marketing

Write and distribute press releases and maintain event listings.

Collaborate with the social media team to maximize outreach.

Build relationships with local organizations and community groups.
Store Operations

Spend one to two shifts weekly as a bookseller.

Collaborate with staff on planning, executing and hosting events.
Qualifications

Experience in publishing, bookselling, or events management preferred.

Enthusiastic reader with a passion for contemporary and diverse literature.

Organized, detail-oriented, and skilled at meeting deadlines.

Comfortable with public speaking and managing audiences.
Compensation and Benefits: $16–$22/hour, 20 hours per week, 40 hours of paid sick time annually, and employee discounts.
