ABOUT THE BOOK
In her new book, Midnight, writer and activist Victoria Shorr examines some of the most important moments in the lives of three significant women: Jane Austen, Mary Shelley, and Joan of Arc. Shorr’s brief but generous novelistic biographies tell the stories of pivotal moments in the lives of these women as they reconcile with unknown futures, loss, love, and death. Midnight superbly relates the stories of these women and the decisions that have put into motion the rest of their lives. With a narrative crafted from letters, journals, and other primary source documents, Shorr deftly brings Victorian sensibilities, turbulent marriages, and these women’s unflinching spirits to life. Midnight will captivate, enthrall, and fascinate as it showcases the interior lives of three of world history’s important women.
ABOUT VICTORIA SHORR
Victoria Shorr’s first novel, Backlands, was named one of Booklist’s top-ten first novels of 2015. She cofounded the Archer School for Girls and the Pine Ridge Girls’ School in South Dakota, the first independent, culturally based, college-prep school for girls on a Native reservation in America. She lives in Pacific Palisades, California.
Midnight is a study in the courage of three women--Jane Austen, Mary Shelley, and Joan of Arc. Jane Austen was poor in 1802, unmarried and homeless. She had outlines, ideas, and first drafts of her future novels but no place to sit and write them. It is at this bleak moment that she receives an offer of marriage from a rich man.
$5 admission to this event at our Brooklyn store. Your $5 admission voucher functions like a gift card and can be used toward anything in store on the night of the event only.
