ABOUT THE BOOK
Winner of the National Book Critics Award and a National Book Award finalist for Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude, Gay is “a writer perfectly suited to find delight. His eye is so brilliant, it seems to glow from within,” says Luis Alberto Urrea. The Book of Delights, Gay’s first prose work, is a collection of short lyric essays, written over the course of a year, that celebrates both the simple and profound joys of daily living. Though grounded in positivity, Gay never brushes over life’s complexities; these musings are written to identify delight despite the challenging times and troubled world in which we live.
Gay wrote his delights starting on his forty-second birthday and ended on his forty-third. The result comprises 102 “essayettes,” ranging in length from a single paragraph to five pages. With his generous embrace, Gay observes and records without prejudice—from the habits and rituals of birds and fireflies; flowers and vegetables; the intensity or mundanity of human interactions and emotional impulses—he zeroes in on the unexpected and exposes the beating, gleaming heart at its center. While inspiring, The Book of Delights is not a how-to book or motivational journal. It is a one-of-a-kind evocation of Gay’s singular voice—funny, poetic, philosophical, and inclusive—where much of the delight is found in the very language with which delight is explored.
