WORD is thrilled to welcome LaTonya Yvette for a celebration of her new book Woman of Color. LaTonya will be joined in conversation by Glory Edim, author of Well-Read Black Girl. Following their conversation, LaTonya and Glory will take questions from the audience and sign books.
ABOUT THE BOOK
Blogger and stylist LaTonya Yvette is known for her unapologetic and candid writing about life’s triumphs and trials, including motherhood, love, death, and racism. In her first book, Woman of Color, LaTonya goes even deeper as she shares stories of her experience growing up as a young woman of color in Brooklyn. Part memoir, part lifestyle guide, the book is packed with moving essays, gorgeous original and archival photographs, and practical style and beauty advice. Each beautifully designed chapter covers a different topic—from young motherhood to how vitiligo has shaped her definition of beauty—and ends with thoughtful advice and lifestyle takeaways like how to tie a head wrap or incorporate new, bold colors into your wardrobe. LaTonya has a special talent for weaving together these heavy and lighter subjects, as she peels away the layers of womanhood and makes sense of the contradictions therein. Along with her own experiences, LaTonya also interviews other women of color who inspire her, including Julee Wilson, fashion and beauty director at Essence magazine, DJ and entrepreneur Hannah Bronfman, and doula Latham Thomas of Mama Glow. By inviting readers into LaTonya’s colorful, poignant, and nuanced world, Woman of Color offers universal takeaways for women from all walks of life.
