ABOUT THE BOOK

In Last Day, the end of the world comes once a year, on May 28th. Or at least, that’s why millions of humans across the planet come together to celebrate. Once rumored to be the day of the actual apocalypse, modern-day Last Day has become an excuse to attend potluck picnics and get questionable tattoos. Though for some, Last Day is still a time to make amends, to come together as if it really were the last day of existence. And so on this Last Day, Ruta introduces us to a band of seemingly unconnected people, each searching for something they can’t quite pin down.

Bookish wunderkind Sarah is looking for love from the much older Kurt, a tattoo artist she met at last year’s Last Day BBQ—but he’s still trying to make amends to the family he destroyed long ago. Former Jehovah’s Witness Rosette thinks her new church, the Last Kingdom on Earth, might be just the thing to help her misfit friend Karen, but this morning, the voices in Karen’s head whispered the name of her long-lost adoptive brother, and she’s plotting to set out and find him.

Miles above them all, astronaut Bear, cosmonaut Svec, and billionaire Japanese space tourist Yui are the only ones left on the International Space Station, watching from afar as life on earth continues on without them.

An exhilarating portrait of human connection, Last Day is part A Visit from the Goon Squad and part Station Eleven. The result is one of the most fearlessly imagined and affecting books of the year.

ABOUT DOMENICA RUTA
