About the Event
Our world is obsessed with drinking. We drink at baby showers and work events, brunch and book club, graduations and funerals. Yet no one ever questions alcohol's ubiquity—in fact, the only thing ever questioned is why someone doesn't drink. Join author Holly Whitaker in conversation with Abbe Wright, senior editor of Read it Forward, for a discusssion about her new book Quit Like a Woman. The event will feature drinks by Getaway, an alcohol-free bar in Greenpoint.
Please note that admission to this event requires either a purchase of the book OR a $5 admission voucher. Books and vouchers can be purchased online in advance or at the door on the day of the event; advance orders will be available for pickup at the store on the day of the event. The admission voucher functions like a gift card and is good toward $5 off anything in store at WORD on the day of the event only.
About the Book
When Holly Whitaker decided to seek help after one too many benders, she embarked on a journey that led not only to her own sobriety, but revealed the insidious role alcohol plays in our society and in the lives of women in particular. She could not ignore the ways that alcohol companies were targeting women, just as the tobacco industry had successfully done generations before.
Fueled by her own emerging feminism, Holly realized that predominant recovery systems (such as Alcoholics Anonymous) are archaic, patriarchal, and ineffective for the unique needs of women and other historically oppressed people. Holly highlights that those individuals don't need to lose their egos, overly apologize, or surrender to a male concept of God, as the tenets of AA state—but rather need to cultivate a deeper understanding of their own identities and take control of their lives.
As she found an alternate way out of her own addiction, she felt a calling to create a sober community with resources for anyone else questioning their relationship with alcohol, so that they might find their way out of the drinking continuum as well. Her resultant feminine-centric recovery program focuses on getting at the root causes that lead people to overindulge and provides the tools necessary to break the cycle of addiction, showing us what is possible when we remove alcohol from our lives and destroy our belief system around it.
Holly’s deeply researched, eye-opening exploration of the ways in which alcohol keeps us down is a must read for anyone who imbibes. QUIT LIKE A WOMAN: The Radical Choice to Not Drink in a Culture Obsessed with Alcohol is at once a groundbreaking examination of drinking culture and a road map to cutting out alcohol in order to live our best lives without the crutch of intoxication. You will never look at drinking the same way again.
