BK: Books Beneath the Bridge with Lisa Ko and Rakesh Satyal

This event takes place at Granite Prospect in Brooklyn Bridge Park

This year WORD brings together two acclaimed, timely voices in fiction for a special reading and conversation in their home borough. Lisa Ko will read from her novel The Leavers, which won the 2016 PEN/Bellweather Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction. She will be joined by Rakesh Satyal, the Lambda Award-winning author of Blue Boy, who will read from his most recent novel No One Can Pronounce My Name.

LISA KO is the author of The Leavers, a novel which won the 2016 PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction. Her fiction has appeared in Best American Short Stories 2016, the New York Times, Buzzfeed, O, The Oprah Magazine, and elsewhere. She has been awarded fellowships and residencies from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the MacDowell Colony, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Writers OMI at Ledig House, the Jerome Foundation, and Blue Mountain Center, among others. A founding coeditor of Hyphen and a fiction editor at Drunken Boat, Ko was born in Queens and lives in Brooklyn.

RAKESH SATYAL is an American novelist known for his novel Blue Boy, which won the 2010 Lambda Literary Award for Gay Debut Fiction and the 2010 Prose/Poetry Award from the Association of Asian American Studies. Satyal was a recipient of a 2010 Fellowship in Fiction from the New York Foundation for the Arts and two fellowships from the Norman Mailer Writers' Colony. He writing has appeared in New York magazine, Vulture, Out magazine, and The Awl. A graduate of Princeton University, he has taught in the publishing program at New York University and has been on the advisory committee for the annual PEN World Voices Festival. He lives in Brooklyn.
