Peanut Butter Dogs by Greg Murray

Just when you thought you were about to embark on an even lower descent into your existential crisis here comes a book, no.... a chronicling of reasons to continue living and fighting the good fight. It's a historical record of some of the most important figures of our time complete with high quality photos and intimate details of their attributes and contributions to society. They act as examples for how we should compose ourselves as well as react in any given situation or any political climate. To this day they continue to perfect the legacy they want to leave behind while continuously making positive impacts on the world around us. You will remember, acknowlege, and appreciate them and what they do the next time you open a jar of Skippy.

Yukiko Motoya's collection of short stories are best described as quirky pieces about modest, everyday female characters that undergo mundane experiences elevated to levels that bounce between fantastic to surreal. One tells the story of a woman that notices that everyday she begins to look more and more like her spouse, another about a salesperson that spent over an entire day helping a mystery customer inside a fitting room try on every single piece of clothing in her store, and the title story being about how a lady took on bodybuilding simply because she wanted to and how everyone in her life took notice except for her own husband. Despite the oddities, I read each of these stories of women exploring their individuality and personal philosophies in obscure situations with a feeling of coziness.

Buncha nerds dating. They keep their nerdy otaku lifestyle a secret from everyone else, though, to protect their reputation. Everyone's in their mid- to late 20s working in an office. Funny and cute and relatable to anyone with nerdy anime and video game obsessions. My favorite couple is the pair that're always arguing. Their origin is pretty endearing and is revealed in Vol. 2!

An ongoing kind of loneliness I feel and a fear of how I'm perceived sexually that I have a hard time describing to people without confusing them is actually framed clearly within the pages of this manga. Fujimoto is a 30 year old that has spent his entire life experiencing difficulties finding romantic love. Luckily he's experiencing his moteki, or in other words a brief period of popularity, after receiving calls and messages from several women from his past at the exact same time. Trying feverishly to get a girlfriend, the book becomes very much about the women he pursues, the bad experiences that shaped their character, and their desires in life as well. Over time, Fuji and his lady friends all develop into better people. Heartbreaking yet hilarious, Moteki will definitely win over your heart as you watch Fujimoto fulfill his own.

In this coming of age biography of the lead singer of Against Me!, Laura Jane Grace documents her years spent as Tom Gabel. She describes friends and family that and come and go, the formation of her iconic band and the many conflicts experienced on the road, and her struggles with transgender dysphoria. For any fan of Against Me! you'll be treated to insight to all of their records and meanings behind many of Laura's lyrics. My favorite line from this book is, "I make the argument that this is the most inspiring we've ever been. It may be ugly but who's to say ugliness isn't inspiring? We're absolutely pushed to our limits. We're climbing Everest. Frostbite has set in. This journey will surely cost limbs. We've run out of food and we're turning to cannibalism. No one gets to leave with their sanity intact. That wouldn't be fair. There's a whole big world full of sensible balanced people, what's so goddamn inspiring about any of them?"

From the same author that translated Charles Bukowski into Spanish, gives the Mexicali subculture and people so much character in his poetry. This is a beautiful, metaphorical, and surprisingly fun read even if the meaning behind the poetry is bittersweet.

Published: And Other Stories - July 7th, 2016

Very dark, transgressive and straightforward writing but very absorbing nonetheless. A Romeo and Juliet inspired novel that satirizes violence in Mexico, Transmigration tells the tale of The Redeemer trying to maintain peace between two families, exchanging bodies being held hostage in the process, in a plague-ridden city. Also translated from Spanish, published by And Other Stories (whose goals includes physically publishing literature most other publishers would consider too risky) and received financial assistance from English PEN'S PEN Translates! program (whose goals includes supporting authors globally and to campaign against the persecution and imprisonment of authors expressing their views).
