I spent most of this book with my mouth agape. The story arcs over a few generations of a family from the Virgin Islands. It blends both folklore and the complications of modern life seamlessly, touching on subjects ranging from race and religion to love and family values. But what makes it truly special is how it illuminates a new perspective on such moments in history as World War II and the civil rights movement of the '60s. A beautiful and complicated book by a talented new voice. (Katelyn)

I love Salinger. He's my go-to pick for favorite author. Rakoff got the opportunity to work for his literary agency in the mid-90's and I was thoroughly jealous. This memoir chronicles her year there as well as her private life in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, before it was cool. But it's Salinger who really sparkles in this. Her short interactions with him are funny and sincere. He's a curmudgeon, as we all know, but he's also endearing. She also gets to read and respond to his fan mail, which inspires her to read his books for the first time. She devours them in one weekend and has enjoyed them yearly ever since. Fans of Salinger will enjoy this intimate glimpse and will run to their bookshelves to reread their favorites. Those who have never read him might find themselves inspired as well! (Katelyn)

I've been obsessively recommending Heller's debut novel, The Dog Stars, for a few months. I'll be equally eager to suggest his sophomore attempt. The Painter follows Jim Stegner, an artist from Santa Fe who has moved to the mountains of Colorado after some major tragedies in his life. He gets into some more trouble and has to go on the run. This book is brutal but beautiful. Fans of Breaking Bad will find wisps of Walter in Jim. In other words, he's an awful person whom you find yourself cheering for in some way or another. (Katelyn)

I'm a huge fan of the classics (I even run the classics book club) so when I spotted this novel that had ties to one of my favorites, Wuthering Heights, I knew it was for me. Wyler does not disappoint. I loved this dark but quirky romance. It's not an exact retelling but has elements from the novel woven into a modern story. And it certainly had me picking up my Bronte when I was done! (Katelyn)

A fun and energetic tale about a retired
composer turned possible bioterroist. The book swings back and forth
between the present and the past as Peter Els flees from the cops. Each
past recollection is punctuated by a musical composition, so I suggest
listening to those as you read along. It's clear why Powers is such a
celebrated author; I found the book enlightening and smart as well as
fun and sentimental. I'll be keeping an eye out for future books from
this award-winning writer and delving into his past books too. (Katelyn)

I had to put this book down a couple of times as it was too overwhelming. But the sparse, gorgeous prose kept me coming back. It's the story of returning abducted children in Kony's Uganda. Told through the eyes of a returning captive, as well as an American journalist trying to make sense of the situation and her own life, it's brutal and alarming but told with such sensitivity and grace. For a dose of reality, I highly suggest picking up this book. (Katelyn)

It's both history lesson and unconventional love story. The history ranges from 1890s America to the ancient Middle East. The story takes you from Syrian culture to Jewish tradition to New York amid the squalor and the mansions of the late 19th century. It's so beautiful and unexpected. She weaves the stories of several people so that the reader can follow and still feel surprised. I loved the book and can't wait for another from this author.
