Most Recent Staff Pick: Well,That Was Awkward by Rachel Vail

This novel is about 8th grader Gracie and the various social dynamics she's dealing with at school while also trying to be the perfect child for her parents to make up for the child they lost long before she was born. I thought this was a light and touching read. This is a really good coming-of age novel that's perfect for tweens who are not yet ready for YA novels but too old for most chapter/middle grade books.

Melody, Crystal, and myself love this picture book! It’s a beautiful tale of identity, family, and finding your own place in the world; whether that place is in a classroom, the family you were born into, or the family that picked you. The illustrations are gorgeous and shimmery that both children and adults will love just as much as the story.

Meet Ada Twist, the third creative student from Miss Lila Greer's class! Just like Iggy Peck, Architect and Rosie Revere, Engineer, this picture book has the story in a clever rhyme throughout the book and great, similar illustrations. I love these picture books because they encourage creativity and kids to be who they want to become when they grow up.

This is a fun, light read about a break-up followed by a new summer romance while also showing how the main character, Lily, grows and finds herself outside of the new relationship. There's also some song lyrics throughout the novel that Lily writes, which I really enjoyed. This is what I call a good, clean teen novel.

This is a heart-breaking but beautiful novel about grief and loss. Ever since Lex's younger brother committed suicide, Lex has withdrawn from her friends and family, keeping her grief to herself. This is a different kind of coming-of-age novel that I really enjoyed and thought was well done. Sometimes I'm in a mood for a really good but sad novel and this did not disappoint. (Lydia)

I didn't know what to expect with this book but I was pleasantly surprised! When they were younger, May and Libby invented Princess X and spent years creating comics about her with May writing the stories and Libby drawing them. When Libby dies in a car accident, Princess X dies with her until a few years later when May suddenly sees stickers of Princess X everywhere. This book is unlike anything else I've read and the neat part is that this is written as a novel with comics about Princess X inserted every once in a while. (Lydia)

I loved the original series growing up so I was curious about the graphic novel version and I really enjoyed it! I thought Telgemeier did a great job telling the story in this form. I enjoyed experiencing the story more visually and her illustrations of the characters and their facial expressions were spot on! This is a great coming-of-age story about a group of girls in middle school starting a baby-sitting business while dealing with school, friendships, families, etc. (Lydia)

I love this series. It's been 20 years since America Singer won Prince Maxon's heart, and now that Princess Eadlyn is of age, it's time for her Selection to begin. While The Heir is the fourth book in the series, the focus has now shifted to the next generation, making it a nice entry point for new readers. Perfect mix of The Bachelor and The Hunger Games, but for those who won't miss the violence and blood-sport of the latter. (Lydia)

This is a super sweet picture book, especially for dads! There always seem to be plenty of picture books about moms but, not so many about dads. This one looks at how close a child and father can be while showing how a father will always be nearby helping his child, even when the kid doesn't know it. I was a big fan of the Veronica Mars TV show so I was happy to discover that the books are just as good. I've always liked Veronica because she's a strong female character and the mystery story lines were always compelling. The great thing about these books is that they give you the background story so it's not necessary to know the show before reading the books. The main focus is the mysteries and this is the second Veronica Mars book with a new PI case for Veronica. Definitely for Veronica Mars fans but I think people who enjoy mystery novels will like this even if they're not familiar with the TV show. (Lydia)

But still, he always manages to enjoy the little things in life. This is a great tale about being small and still managing to overcome obstacles, as well as make new friends and cupcakes!
