BK: Rachel Khong presents GOODBYE, VITAMIN with Isaac Fitzgerald

    07/11/2017 - 7:00pm

This event will take place in our Brooklyn store.

Goodbye, Vitamin is the story of thirty-year- old Ruth, freshly disengaged from her fiancé and finding life wanting—not quite what she’d planned. She quits her job and moves back to her parents’ home to help with her ailing father, only to find things more complicated than she'd realized. Her father, a prominent history professor, is losing his memory and only erratically lucid; her mother, meanwhile, is lucidly erratic. But as Ruth's father’s condition intensifies, the comedy and love and hope in her situation take hold, gently transforming her grief. On the surface, Goodbye, Vitamin is a deft portrait of the moments, rhythms and minutiae that make up everyday life; at its core, it is a profound reflection on love and family, redemption and forgiveness, and our very deepest connections.

Rachel Khong grew up in Southern California, and holds degrees from Yale University and the University of Florida. From 2011 to 2016, she was the managing editor then executive editor of Lucky Peach magazine. Her fiction and nonfiction have appeared in Tin House, Joyland, American Short Fiction, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Believer, and California Sunday. She lives in San Francisco. Goodbye, Vitamin is her first novel.

Isaac Fitzgerald has been a firefighter, worked on a boat, and been given a sword by a king, thereby accomplishing three out of five of his childhood goals. He is the editor of BuzzFeed Books and co-author of Pen & Ink: Tattoos and the Stories Behind Them and Knives & Ink: Chefs and the Stories Behind Their Tattoos (with Recipes). Every tattoo tells a story, whether the ink is meaningful or the result of a misguided decision made at the age of fourteen, representative of the wearer's true self or the accidental consequence of a bender. These most permanent and intimate of body adornments are hidden by pants legs and shirttails, emblazoned on knuckles, or tucked inside mouths.
