Most recent staff pick: Gorgeous by Cathy G. Johnson

I've been waiting for this book since Cathy did an event at our Brooklyn location last year and it DID NOT DISAPPOINT. Cathy's hazy graphite illustrations work perfectly with this brief but emotionally devastating story. It leads you down surprising paths while exploring unexpected emotional depths. I finished this book and was caught so off guard, I immediately read it again. (Dylan)

Under an authoritarian Middle Eastern bureaucracy known as "the Gate," a man waits in line to receive permission to have a bullet removed from his stomach that his government refuses to even acknowledge. Set against the backdrop of the Arab Spring, The Queue toes a fine line between dystopia and reality. Kafkaesque doesn't even begin to describe it. (Dylan)

Known mostly as a poet in her native Croatia, Savičević’s uncanny prose pains a vivid picture of life in the Zagreb suburb known as Old Settlement while still keeping it (sometimes frustratingly) at arm's length. Dada, like all of the other characters, is haunted by emotional trauma, both personal and national. Her attempts to answer the questions in the wake of her brother's suicide leads her to confront this trauma head-on, culminating in a chaotic and violent ending. (Dylan)

His longest work to date, Patience is also Clowes' most ambitious, pushing the boundaries of both science fiction and the graphic novel. Its intricate story of time travel and murder appeals to newcomers and longtime fans alike. (Dylan)

Using anachronistic wit and delightfully expressive illustrations, Beaton delivers hysterical re-imaginings of historical events, the literary canon, and pop culture. Even the most obscure references are made hilarious thanks to Beaton's impeccable style. Some will even send you on Wikipedia binges trying to learn more about Tom Longboat or Katherine Sui Fun Cheung. In any case, every comic in this collection will elicit at least a chuckle and, more often than not, uncontrollable laughter. I really can't recommend this enough. (Dylan)

What struck me most about this book was how nonpolitical it is. Instead of rhetoric or statistics, Hayes uses compassion, common sense, and cold, hard, non-judgmental facts to guide the reader through the journey of two women of differing backgrounds as they navigate the abortion process. This largely technical discussion is tempered by Hayes' often humorous illustrations. Both elucidating and comforting, this book is a much needed addition to our national discussion of abortion. I missed this book when it debuted last year to widespread praise. I can now say that it is one of my absolute favorite novels. Toews handles the topic of suicide and mental illness with a level of empathy and honesty that can only be drawn from personal experience. To combine that with such engaging characters and unexpected humor is an extraordinary achievement. (Dylan)

In his latest book, Coates brings lyricism and historical emphasis to the powerful treatise he directs at his 14 year-old son: the realities of being a black man in a country with a history of violence against black bodies. Yet in many ways, this book is really an open letter to the reader and -- more specifically -- "the Dreamers" who are complicit in white supremacy and reap its benefits absent-mindedly. For this indictment, some have described Coates' outlook as bleak and lamented his lack of answers. Those who look to this book for policy or pragmatism will find none. The importance instead is in the perspective it provides, the emotion with which it is described, and the opportunity for understanding it creates. (Dylan)

When real estate interests and corporate logic threatened to destroy the New York Pubic Library from within, a dedicated group of writers, scholars, and activists saved a historic institution from itself in a rare example of the public good triumphing over corporatism. Sherman (whose own reporting for The Nation was a boon to activists) examines every aspect of this controversy, from the NYPL's philanthropic roots to the present day. The result is an overdue reminder of the enduring cultural importance of libraries in the digital age. (Dylan)

A wildly original debut, The Ghost Network traces the mystery surrounding pop-superstar Molly Metropolis, who disappeared at the height of her celebrity. Through a metafictional frame, DiSabato gives an almost obsessive examination of Molly's life and career, as well as the radical theory and Illuminati-esque conspiracy at the heart of it. Layered with avant-garde philosophy, domestic terrorism, pop music, and a queer love story to boot, The Ghost Network is an exhilarating ride through the streets and subways of Chicago. (Dylan)

Gillen and McKelvie produce some of the sharpest dialogue and most breathtakingly gorgeous artwork in the industry. Their latest collaboration breathes new life into familiar territory, exploring the intersection of pop culture, fame, and mythology. Every 90 years, a pantheon of literal musical gods is resurrected. Each is destined for untold fame, yet doomed to die only two years later. The story follows these gods through the perspective of their mortal mega-fan, Laura, who is bent on uncovering a potential conspiracy after one of the gods is accused of murder. Sure to evoke nostalgia from anyone who's ever snuck into a sold out show or plastered their walls with their favorite pop icon's face, this volume is the fast-paced first chapter in what seems poised to become a true comics classic.
